Laverty has been in a Moto GP environment before, but never in the 800cc class.

Ireland’s Eugene Laverty could have a ride in Moto GP next season after it has emerged he is at Brno this weekend for a meeting with Yamaha chiefs regarding a possible move.

The Antrim man could even take over from Colin Edwards who has had a disappointing season on his Tech 3 Yamaha, but it is pure speculation at this stage.

That would be an exciting move for the Tech 3 team with Cal Crutchlow already in the garage. He and Laverty know each other from their British Superbikes days and could form an exciting partnership for fans of Moto GP in Ireland and Britain.

“Cal’s done really well. A lot more goes on behind closed doors than people know, he’s had problems on the R1 this year just like I had. Getting used to the bike is hard, people don’t know. Considering that he’s done well this season.”

Laverty will be in pensive mood this weekend, as he has crunch talks with Yamaha chiefs over a possible Moto GP ride next season

Laverty was adamant that Moto 2 is not an option, as he wants to stay at the highest level. A move to the 600cc class could arguably be viewed as a step down, whereas going to Moto GP is clearly a move upwards if not at least sidewards.

“No, no Moto 2. GP is the place I want to be, I was looking to hopefully come in like Ben Spies did. On the back of a World Superbikes title, but it doesn’t look to be.”

Such a move would be exciting at Tech 3 Yamaha are a highly respected team in the paddock, and it would be another progression in the Toomebridge rider’s career.

It would be a shame for Laverty not to ride at world level next season, and this news of a possible Moto GP ride is sure to excite the Irishman’s fans.

Tech 3 are not up there with the big boys, but it is very hard to compete at the front end for the satellite teams. However they are a competent team and arguably the best of the rest outside the factory bikes.

Eugene could do a lot worse than move to Yamaha as if he were to have a good season on the Tech 3 bike, who is to say that he may not partner Jorge Lorenzo the season after next?

Would Jorge be happy to have Laverty at FIAT? Lorenzo and Rossi never saw eye to eye at team-mates due to both men's huge talent and will to win.

There could even be the possibility of Yamaha running 3 factory bikes, just like Repsol Honda this season, although that would be financially straining and it is a pipe dream more than a reality at this stage.

All in all, the news today is very interesting for Irish motorcycle fans, and we will be watching this space with anticipation. I’m sure many Laverty fans will be watching and waiting, hoping Eugene gets the ride his skills and talents deserve.
